~~19th c. Sailor Made Keeping Box - Old Blue Paint Interior~~

I am offering for your consideration a classic 19th c. inlaid sailor made keeping box. It is a one of a kind piece of early folkart!

With its vivid inlay (various wood types), original hinges and unique small size, it is in a very good state of preservation. It was created, at least in part, from a cigar box, however the exterior is quite lovely.

I have included a number of pictures enabling you to view each side of this box, as well as the interior. The old robin's egg blue paint appears to be original, as is the dark green velvet lining and a fitted pin cushion. There was likely a piece of fabric that is missing from the bottom of the interior, since part of the cigar box is visable.

It is a charming smaller size measuring 7 1/2 inches wide x 5 inches deep x 3 1/4 inches tall.

Fortunately, all of the figural inlaid elements, corners and form are in tact with no loss. The only apologies that I can find, are a early separation on the top of the lid, a fine hairline on the left side of the box and a small sliver of wood missing on the upper left side of the interior, above the mirror.

Circa: 19th century. New England. Private collection.
